Tips for Saving Money on Gas

by | Apr 1, 2022

The price of gas is rising like we’ve never before. Every time we head to the pump, it costs us more to fill up our tanks. With no end in sight, here are some important fuel efficiency tips that could mean more money in your pocket.

  1. Make a Plan. Weekends are for errands and driving around town going from store to store. But with gas prices on the rise, it makes more sense to consolidate some trips and do less stop and go shopping. Did you know warm engines run more efficiently than cold ones? Try to get all your errands done in one afternoon, and reduce the number of stops you make. Less driving means less gas; talk to your friends about carpooling to work or consider taking public transportation one or more days to break up the week. If you make a plan, and stick to it, you could save yourself a considerable amount of money!
  1. Slow Down! Putting the pedal to the metal is going to cost you (maybe in more ways than one. Can you say speeding ticket?) Aggressive driving habits like quickly accelerating, coming to sudden stops and weaving in and out of traffic isn’t just annoying to other drivers, its also bad for your fuel efficiency. Moderate speed will save gas and wear and tear on your car.
  1. Light Loads are Best. Do you have a bunch gear in your backseat or trunk? It could be weighing you down and wasting your gas. The lighter the load, the better. Extra weight creates drag and costs you money at the pump.
  1. Avoid Idling. Did your mom ask you to take her to the grocery so she could run in for one quick item? Resist the urge to sit idle, waiting for her and instead, find a parking spot and turn the engine off. You’d be shocked to find out how much gas is wasted by idling. Try to avid rush hour traffic, too. All that sitting around on the highway is costing you in fuel.
  1. Maintain Your Tires. Under-inflated tires are not only dangerous, they can lower your gas mileage a lot. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can improve your gas mileage by 3.3% just by keeping your tires properly inflated. Click HERE for more on this topic.
